For those who strive to comprehend what is truly taking place at Holy Mass, at least to the extent that poor sinners like us are able, the sacred rite is truly awe inspiring. It is Heaven on earth and a glorious foreshadowing of things to come.
Writing in his comprehensive, indispensable work, The Mass, Fr. Joseph Dunney explained it in part as follows:
To eyes of faith, a divine spectacle presents itself as the liturgy rises steadily toward the climax of the Consecration. We peer into that which lies beyond, while in undertones of quiet gravity the priest recites the Communicantes. There is a new scene upon which the keen vision of faith dwells. Suddenly we are brought into the company of the elect; a stately procession passes before our soul’s eyes – Mary, the Mother of God, the Apostles, martyrs, and confessors; and we are put into communication with all the saints who stand before the throne of God.
Earth breaks up; Time drops away.
In flows with its new day.
Of endless life.
At the same time, there is one part of Holy Mass in particular – a prayer – that is breathtaking for an entirely different reason.
Far from providing the faithful with an awe inspiring taste of Heavenly things, it calls the mind back to earth with a stark reminder that we are as yet but members of the Church Militant and thus exposed to all manner of trials and tribulations; instilling in the attentive nothing less than a sense of foreboding.
The prayer of which I speak is that following the Agnus Dei:
Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst to Thine Apostles: Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: look not upon my sins but upon the faith of Thy Church; and deign to grant her that peace and unity which is in accord with Thy will: Who livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen.
Turning once more to Fr. Dunney:
“Regard the faith of thy Church.” Consider the Church’s strong adherence to everything that Christ has said and done. When it is a question of what our Lord teaches, she is always outspoken, always fearless. Never has she veiled her teaching under the mask of prudence, never proved coward in her fealty to Jesus Christ. This is the victory by which she overcomes the world.
As Fr. Dunney wrote, Pope Pius XI was gloriously reigning. The modernists, thanks to the efforts of his predecessors; in particular, Pope St. Pius X, had been neutered and driven underground. The voice of the Church was strong and clear.
In the years immediately following the publication of The Mass, the Holy Father would promulgate Quas Primas and Mortalim Amimos – proclaiming the Social Kingship of Christ and condemning the burgeoning errors of the ecumenical movement, respectively – thus proving Fr. Dunney’s thesis of a fearless and outspoken Church entirely correct.
More noteworthy still, as Fr. Dunney put pen to paper, Vatican II and the crisis of faith that would emerge therefrom were still decades away…
As such, he could not know that, for those of us living in the dark shadow of the Council, the prayer for peace that is offered at Holy Mass can take on an entirely different character; namely, that of a warning.
Note well that the “faith of Thy Church” of which this prayer speaks is not so much the unchangeable Faith that comes to us from the Apostles as it is the “faith” that is made manifest (or not) as her members live, express and defend it, and this in a particular way by the Roman Pontiff.
In the words of Fr. Dunney, “This is the victory by which she overcomes the world.”
In our day, what does the Lord see when He looks down upon the “faith” of His Church, so-called?
Far from seeing outspokenness, fearlessness and fealty, He sees churchmen rushing to deny His teachings! He sees cowardly men who dare not speak the truth plainly! He sees men who behave as if man is sovereign and all religions are means of salvation!
In short, the “faith” of the Church in our day is one with the world; i.e., the world, in large measure, has overcome the Church!
Indeed, we know that the world will not succeed in winning the war, but only a fool can deny that we are, at present, losing the battle for the soul of society, and this for having dethroned its only true King.
With all of this in mind, consider once more the prayer for peace at Holy Mass:
Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst to Thine Apostles: Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: look not upon my sins but upon the faith of Thy Church; and deign to grant her that peace and unity which is in accord with Thy will: Who livest and reignest God, world without end. Amen.
As Fr. Dunney suggests, there is an inextricable connection between the faith of the Church as made manifest in her members – in particular on the part of those who are charged with teaching, sanctifying and governing us – and the degree to which peace will be realized in the present order.
This, my friends, should cause each and every one of us to shudder.
If we are honest, we must admit that the faithlessness of the Church in our day is such that we deserve nothing other than peacelessness in return.
As such, those among us who, by the grace of God, have retained the sensus Catholicus are compelled to beg Our Lord not to look too intently upon the faith of the Church, but rather to accept our heartfelt acts of reparation, our humble prayers, and our meager sacrifices offered for the conversion of those who lead us and for the healing of His Mystical Body here on earth.
All roads lead to Fatima…
When we consider the peace that is in accord with the Lord’s will, our attention should immediately be drawn to the message of Our Lady of Fatima. There, she told us plainly how her Divine Son wills that peace should be attained.
We have not listened; more specifically, the popes have not listened.
As I write, the man known as Francis is preparing to participate in yet another interfaith abomination in Assisi; an earthbound travesty called “Thirst for Peace” wherein Jesus Christ and the Holy Catholic faith will once more be placed shoulder-to-shoulder with all manner of false gods and godless religions.
Bear this in mind the next time you assist at Holy Mass and petition the Lord to “look upon the faith of Thy Church,” and then praise Him all the more that He is merciful and slow to anger.
We are living under a chastisement at this very moment, to be sure, and yet we can also be certain that Our Blessed Lady is, to large extent, restraining the hand of her Divine Son.
Justice, however, cannot be forestalled forever; something must eventually give.
The time is already late.
“Pius XI gloriously reigning”
Think about it, the Church fought off hostile takeovers for 1929 years. Why all of a sudden, did the Modernists get the upper hand? Because, as a result of the Lateran Treaty, Pius XI suddenly found himself swimming in money.
What did Pius XI do with this money? Pius XI gave the money to an amoral relative to invest, not caring how much corruption it would bring into the Church. Do you think that the Holy Ghost would stay and defend the Vatican no matter how much filth the Vatican became involved in? No!
Google, Bernardino Nogara.
All roads lead to Fatima…
Yes, they do. We simply must, by whatever means, get Russia consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary & the Third Secret of Fatima revealed in its entirety. With the reticence of the Hierarchy & intransigence of PF this is a mammoth task. One way could be to unsettle PF by publicly co-ordinating efforts to have this done immediately. We need the support of our clergy & prelates, especially those who silently support the SSPX, to speak up. Soon there will be no sense to their religious vocations if the CC is seen to be a dead horse. At this stage they really don’t have any option, & their voices could make all the difference to stalling the Lund commemorations i.e. CC input, & fully revealing VII as part of Satan’s plot to undermine the One Holy Catholic & Apostolic Church.
Nice post, Louie! What a pleasant surprise to see this post about the Holy Mass and particularly, the wonderful book, “The Mass” by Fr. Dunney. Before I even clicked on the link to read your article, just reading the headline what immediately popped into my little head was the thought of a wonderful book I’d stumbled upon some years ago called “The Mass” that absolutely blew me away (and continues to). I don’t remember where I ever found this old book…my copy is a hardback edition from 1947…but I’ll never part with it. Highly, highly recommended.
“All roads lead to Fatima…”
Yes, and Our Lady mentioned Pius XI by name at Fatima. Six days after the Lateran Treaty was ratified, Our Lady came to Sister Lucia at Tuy, Spain. On that occasion, Sister Lucia was given the famous vision of the Trinity. Our Lady then formally requested the Consecration of Russia.
The Vatican Bank has not changed it ways since 1929. Nothing has changed. The Holy Ghost has not returned to save the Vatican. Speaking up will change nothing. Do you get it yet?
Louie, your article here is very timely for me. I recently had the unfortunate family obligation to attend a N.O. “mass” . At the very start of the “mass”, the pastor (in his late 50’s perhaps) opened with the words to those in attendance: “Now turn to those next to you and ask the question ‘Where is your happy place?” The giggling congregation answered “the golf course”, “the beach”, “Burger King”, etc. I was told this is how he starts every “mass”. Do we have to wonder why faithlessness leads to peacelessness? I am convinced the N.O. “church” is the church of giggles. Heaven help us all!
One of my favorite things about the Mass is the way it helps me transition from the world outside the Church, to the foot of the altar. Especially at High Mass, I’m first reminded of my sinful nature and God’s willingness to make my soul as white as snow (asperges); and then I’m asked to account for why my soul still feels afflicted and abandoned, when all I have to do is put my hope in God, and remember He’s going to turn, and with one look, make His people rejoice in Him. By that time, I ALWAYS feel the “joy of my youth” restored, along with the sober realization that I’ll never come near to meriting all that God has already given me; much less the miracles that are coming next. I’m ready to participate in the rest of the Holy Sacrifice, with a real sense of gratitude -that I know I should always feel.
I think in your place, I’d have been tempted to shout out :
“a TRADITIONAL Mass where they don’t ever do THIS stuff!”
But I’d probably silently offer it up, instead, for the restoration of the Church.
I’ve had the same type of experience visiting distant relatives.
Will these clowns ever be converted back into serious priests?
Think Consecration of Russia…..

Truly dreadful! It does cause me to shudder.
You have once again uncovered another layer of (painful) truth for me, Mr. Verrecchio.
Thank you for helping me (once again) to see more clearly.

“For those of us living in the dark shadow of the Council” (to borrow Louie’s excellent phrase):
Today is the 170th anniversary of Our Lady of LaSalette’s appearance to two shepherd children. On September 19, 1846, Our Lady appeared here:

All roads lead to Fatima ……. which echoes LaSalette.
“We should be convinced that we were chosen to be among the few who listen to the voice of Our Lady and wait for the chastisement she predicted. These cherished ones must give proof of their love. They must give proof of their fidelity before the word of God is accomplished. This is the situation we are in. I do not know how many years we must await for the promises of La Salette and Fatima to be fulfilled. At times we think: “Now it has to come, because it is impossible for the situation to be any worse.” Then, it does not come. The stormy sky releases just a few drops of rain and the clouds dissipate. Again the sky becomes stormy… People laugh at us. We should remember Noah. When the rain finally fell, it was the Deluge.”

helpusLord–my thoughts exactly. I had to bite my tongue!!!
Is it your contention then that God has withdrawn from His Church & the Gates of Hell have prevailed?
I said the Holy Ghost is not there to defend the Vatican. That means the Vatican has been taken over by the Modernists. We all agree on that don’t we?
The Church continues on as Christ promised it would. There is a faithful remnant. We hope and pray for the conversion of the Pope and all of the Bishops that need converting.
In the Apocalypse it says that real trouble will begin when “He who restrains is removed”. I think that is a clear reference to the Holy Ghost. God didn’t leave His Hierarchy open to such a brutal Modernist takeover for no reason.
What better reason is there than the massive financial corruption that started in 1929 and continues to this day? Our Lady made the formal request for the Consecration of Russia six days after the Lateran Treaty was ratified. Our Lady named Pius XI at Fatima, stating a worse war would begin under his watch.
That Our Lady felt the need to mention Pius XI in such a negative context should speak volumes to us. No one gives it a second thought. I think it was a very telling admission by Our Lady that Pius XI would do something that would leave the Vatican defenseless for the first time in history.
“I am reminded of Luther’s comment when he changed the Mass. He said, they should keep the outer trappings, because most of the faithful wouldn’t notice the difference. It’s frightening to think that the offertory of the New Mass is taken word for word from the sater meal of the Jewish holiday of Passover. In the New Mass the Priest offers bread and wine; however, in the True Mass, the Priest offers the Immaculate Victim. It is a blasphemy to offer God bread and wine”
ock–Hold on to your hat when the Francis pseudo-church celebrates Luther’s “reformation” in 2017 while ignoring the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Fatima. Why shouldn’t the post-conciliar “church” celebrate Luther? He founded the protestant sects and the N.O. “church” is now protestant. He is their leader.
The very existence of Protestantism proves the divinity of the Catholic Church ; for there must have been dogmatic truth declared before it could be denied, and there could not have been dogmatic truth declared without authority. To protest against authority is to admit authority ; for the act of protest is the personal assertion of authority, the only difference between the Catholic and the Protestant (in regard to this one question of authority) being that the Catholic says it resides in the teaching Church, whereas the Protestant says it resides in his own mind. Our Lady did say she had one more appearance to make???
I’m a homebound old man today. An SSPX priest brings me the sacraments about every four weeks. When I visit this site I am so pleased at the work Louie does and the comments made by such insightful followers. I consider all of you as family.
God bless each one and all of you.
Matthew 6:23
23 But if thy eye be evil thy whole body shall be darksome. If then the light that is in thee, be darkness: the darkness itself how great shall it be!
Titus 1:15
15 All things are clean to the clean: but to them that are defiled, and to unbelievers, nothing is clean: but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

Peace and blessings brother.

Revelation 21:8
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, they shall have their portion in the pool burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.
Thank you, OTC. You are blessed to have the Traditional sacraments administered by a Traditional priest. Sadly, there are many, many Catholics who do not have access to these abundant graces at any age. May God bless you and keep you in His loving care.
I believe we all know the demonic attack against Christ and the Catholic Church was never as great as it was with the success of dethroning Christ in the man-invented Novus Ordo. The liturgy is the primary teacher of our religion at the same time, and more importantly, it is Christ returning to feed His lambs with His Holy Manna. Make a mockery of His Holy Sacrifice, as the Novus Ordo does, and reorient man away from Christ’s suffering and death, as the Novus Ordo does, and its almost clear sailing for the loss of faith.
I thank God daily that He saved my life through leading me out of the heresy of Protestantism and into His one, true Church and did that primarily through leading me to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by an invitation from a Catholic neighbor to attend Mass prior to the wreckage of Vatican II. Through the grace of God I knew without a doubt that He was present and that He called me to be there to worship and adore Him as He so rightly deserves. This is why I find the Novus Ordo a complete abomination. It is a mockery of Christ. It is a Protest against Christ. It is nothing more than another Protestant-type invention of man designed to destroy the true faith and the soul.
My response would have been “as far away from here as possible!”.
OldTradCat, God bless you!
I’m an oldtradcat as well-the only Catholic in my family-not homebound but basically ignored by my anti-Catholic family so I consider the faithful Catholics like you and those on this website to be my family.
How that has been borne out, whilst all have had their reason and faith killed off gently by the enemies within, the bishops, priests, religious, and latterly the lay “Catholic expert or pastoral leader”. Francis is their worldly leader, successor of Communist tyrants.
Thank you, OldTradCat.
And God bless you, too!
Apart from the infinite insult to God that the new mass displays by de-throning God and putting man at the centre, there is another issue.
Since the inventors of Novus Ordo Missae weredeliberate in their intention to create a rite that did not make manifest the intention to do what the Church does, i.e. make present the Sacrifice of Calvary upon the altar, then any priest who uses the new “missal” cannot be presumed to have the intention to do what the Church does. It doesn’t matter if he’s a “really good, orthodox, conservative, anti-modernist” or what have you. Nor does it matter if he has the interior intention to consecrate validly. Since we don’t know the interior intention of a priest, nor can we know, then all we have to go on is the external signs.
A priest who has the intention to do what the Church does could not and would not use the Novus Ordo Missae, so for all practical purposes, it has to be regarded as invalid in all cases. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong and I will happily retract this.
The man who promulgated such a rite cannot possibly have been the Vicar of Christ, the Supreme Pontiff, the Holy Father, the Rock upon which the Church stands, the Supreme Teacher of the Church, the Pope. To say otherwise is approaching blasphemy and heresy.
As one last spiteful dig at the Mass they just destroyed, the English translators of the Novus Ordo turned “Ite missa est” (Go, it is the sending out) into “The Mass is ended, go in peace”. A deliberate and shocking mistranslation.
Think about it. They knew what they were doing, and they smugly assert that the Mass is ended. The Mass is ended! And they want us to be at peace with that.
They ended and destroyed the true Mass, and boldly rubbed our faces in it, right there. What’s your problem? Be happy about it. Be at peace.
Bastards.
And they had us say “Thanks be to God” after that announcement. Wow.
Wow. Wow. Wow.
I am choking on tears right now.
It makes anyone loyal to the Church reel in shock when this is discovered, but then, as the Church Militant, we must regather ourselves, recognise our diabolical enemies and frustrate their plans by refusing and rejecting the Novus Ordo and everything that comes with it, including the traps and snares planted within the documents of Vatican II itself.
Many years ago, a Traditional Catholic priest once said to me: “The N.O. mass is the Mass of Satan”. At the time, I thought he was being very harsh. Now I have no doubt he was absolutely right. Satan is jumping for joy at every desecration! Catholics who love their faith have every right to be angry!!! Many souls will go to hell because of this. I fear that includes “Traditional” Catholics who sit on the fence and don’t join the fight for Our Lord and His Church. We need to be Soldiers of Christ.
Awesome. This teaches that the traditional practice is dynamic and laden with meaning. With our consent of “Amen”, the “We” become and are the “it” that is sent out, active recipients/participants in the dynamism of the Holy Mass — from the hoary shadows of innocent Abel to Christ crucified. Like the soul that encompasses and holds together the body, as members of Christ — or little Christs —- we assist in sustaining all things. See how Catholics are truly Christian. See how as Catholics we were always invited to participate ever so sublimely and profoundly in the Mass even before, and much more so than the pretentiousness of Vatican II and the mass of the Novus Ordo.
Many years ago, my mother instructed me that I was entering into the Real Presence of Christ at ( the N.O.) Mass…that I was to listen to His Word in the readings, and prepare to receive Him..Body, Blood , Soul and Divinity in Holy Communion…
Body
Blood
Soul
Divinity
Is this not in fact blasphemous to describe this as the work of Satan ???
Ever mindful–You did not read my comment carefully. I said “The Mass of Satan”. I did not say that those who enter into the church with holiness and love of the Lord were demonic. You (and countless others) deserve the True Mass!! If the N.O. church believed in the Real Presence of Our Lord, why are unconsecrated hands administering the Sacred Host? Why is the Tabernacle hidden? Why do those who receive Our Lord, receive in the hand and standing? Is Our Lord not worthy of kneeling in humility? Why are so many in the congregation dressed like they are going to the beach? Why are the Consecrated Hosts handled like they are potato chips? What happened to the Saint Michael prayer? Why have so many churches taken down the Stations of the Cross? What happened to the lines for confession when everyone is on the Holy Communion line? Why are so many pastors acting like stand-up comics? What happened to chapel veils? I could go on forever, but I don’t think you would want me to. Are you really saying that this is NOT blasphemous and the work of Satan???? Whenever you or anyone walks into a N.O. church, you are giving consent to everything I have outlined and more (MUCH MUCH MORE!). Think about it and be EVER MINDFUL!!!!
🙂
Ever Mindful,
Mother knows best.
This video series in the link below answers all those questions you raise and more. The book is even better, but the videos will suffice for people in a hurry. It is one of the best books I have read.
Work of Human Hands – a Theological Critique of the Mass of Paul VI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdfUm_c8gCs&list=PLDA085477E90AC096
Bishop Tissier de Mallerais:
“I spoke this morning to the children about Saint Hermenegild. He was a young martyr,
seventeen years old, who lived in the sixth century. He was Catholic, but his father was a
heretic, an Arian. He was supposed to inherit the throne of Spain, but his father, furious that
his son was a Catholic, forbade him the throne and sentenced him to prison. Hermenegild –
whom we celebrate on April 13th (a month ago) was in prison for several months as Easter approached. He wanted to receive Communion, Holy Communion for Easter. His father was thinking the same thing and sent him a bishop carrying Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament! What a joy for Hermenegild to be able to make his Easter communion! Except that when the bishop entered the prison cell, he presented himself thus: ‘I am the Bishop of Huesca, I am an Arian and I bring you Holy Communion!’ ‘I am Arian,’ that is to say ‘I am a heretic, I’m not Catholic.’
It was a bishop who was not Catholic, dear faithful, who brought Holy Communion to
Hermenegild. What did Hermenegild do? What would you have done in his place? Would you still have accepted to receive Holy Communion? In order to receive Jesus in the
Eucharist, is it not worth making some compromises, receiving even from unworthy hands the Lord Jesus? This bishop celebrated Mass validly though he did not believe that Jesus is God, because that was the Arian religion. He did not even believe that Jesus was God! But we do think he could validly celebrate Mass and he was bringing Jesus in the Eucharist!
Well, in the twinkling of an eye, inspired by one of the gifts of the Holy Ghost – whom we
are celebrating today − the gift of Counsel, he said: ‘No. I will not receive communion from
your sacrilegious hands! As for me, I am in chains but I am free to work my salvation. You, my lord, are free but you are a slave of the devil because you have a false faith, you’re not Catholic! And I will not receive Holy Communion from sacrilegious hands!’ “
For a thorough and a make-your-soul-sick if you are a faithful Catholic expose of who was responsible for the abomination called the Novus Ordo, and the diabolic methods used to implement it, read the 38 part series at the traditioninaction.org website.
For a thorough, and make-your-soul-sick if you are a faithful Catholic, expose of who was responsible for the NO and the diabolical methods used to implement it, read the 38-part series found here http://traditioninaction.org/HotTopics/f073_Dialogue_1.htm
Then, read the book “The Great Sacrilege” written many years ago by Fr. James F. Wathen about the NO here http://www.cathinfo.com/TheGreatSacrilegeCI.pdf
Thank you, Catherine and The Papal Subject for these links. I was also told by a very wise priest that the priest gets his holiness from the Mass (the True Mass). There is nothing a priest could do (no matter how holy he is) to bring holiness to the N.O. mass because it is intrinsically NOT HOLY. One is God-centered. The other is man-centered. Take your pick.
When the new mass first came out, a lot of Priests reacted strongly and rightly so. But using the term, “Mass of Satan”, would not be the way a Traditional Priest would describe the Novus Ordo now. There will be people who go to the new mass in Heaven.
“Whenever you or anyone walks into a N.O. church, you are giving consent to everything I have outlined and more (MUCH MUCH MORE!).”
—> That sentence makes me tremble. It is true. You’ll never catch me in one of those NO buildings nor at a NO “celebration”.
Archbishop Lefebvre’s writings on the N.O. changed over time, growing more and more against it as something that had potential to corrupt, but at first, recommending it be attended where no traditional Mass was available.
I must assume he believed the Eucharist was therefore being confected, as his later comments were more directed at the danger of even the priest being swayed to the man-centered influence it exerts.
One of St. John Bosco’s prophecies contains these words:
“Things follow too slowly upon each other, but the great Queen of Heaven is at hand; the Lord’s power is Hers. Like mist She shall scatter Her enemies. She shall vest the Venerable Old Man with all his former garments. ”
Footnotes say the Old Man is the Pope, so it may indicate a return to the Traditional Mass as the “ordinary” along with Our Lady’s Triumph.
Suits me. 😉
Sorry, meant that to go in as a separate comment, not a reply.
“Whenever you or anyone walks into a N.O. church, you are giving consent to everything I have outlined and more (MUCH MUCH MORE!).”
Not true. It is allowable to attend a wedding or funeral to avoid upsetting the family. What you cannot do is participate in the actual service. It would be the same as going to a Protestant service. Just walking in the building doesn’t me that you are consenting to Protestantism.
Rushintuit–#1–The priest who called the N.O. Mass “the Mass of Satan” in no way was condemning those you attend this mass. Let’s leave that to God. Those who attend the TLM, on the other hand, are not automatically assured of Heaven.
#2-It is allowable to attend a wedding, funeral or other event to avoid upsetting the family. When I find myself in that situation, I am strictly an observer. I often think it is very good for Trads to attend the N.O. mass every now and then so that they can truly appreciate how blessed they are. No argument with you on this matter at all.
seder meal
Yes, it is excellent. Very instructive. A great aid in de-programming from the novus ordo religion.
Sorry for posting something unrelated to this topic, but I think its very important that people see this. 1st video is from you tube which I thought was probably a hoax? To my surprise, when I looked at the c-span release of hillarys speech in NC, I was shocked !!! This stuff can be down by a process called blue screening. Look at the cell phones of the people they are not even recording the same scene ??? Something very scary going on ????

It’s been awhile– here’s my caveat: before cementing oneself into intransigent positions remember what Archbishop Lefebvre wrote in chapter 14 of his Open Letter to Confused Catholics: “I sent out in 1963 to the Holy Ghost Fathers and which has been published in one of my previous books. I wrote: ‘We may say without hesitation, that certain liturgical reforms have been needed, and it is to be hoped that the Council will continue in this direction.’ I recognized that a renewal was indispensable to bring an end to a certain sclerosis due to a gap which had developed between prayer, confined to places of worship, and the world of action-schools, the professions and public life.”
And again:
Archbishop Lefebvre did not hesitate to speak publicly on the question of the orthodoxy and validity of Paul VI’s Mass. He considered that “one cannot say generally that the New Mass is invalid or heretical”; however, “it leads slowly to heresy.”
(…)
In 1975, the Archbishop added that the New Mass:
is ambivalent and ambiguous because one priest can say it with a totally Catholic faith in the sacrifice, etc., and another can say it with a different intention, because the words he pronounces and the gestures he makes no longer contradict [other intentions].
So it seems that abuses can occur, but in no way did he blaspheme it as the “Mass of Satan”.
Bishop Fellay:
“…The same for the Mass. They want us to recognize not only that the [New] Mass is valid provided it is celebrated correctly, etc., but that it is licit. I told them: we don’t use that word. It’s a bit messy, our faithful have enough [confusion] regarding the validity, so we tell them, ‘The New Mass is bad, it is evil’ and they understand that. Period!’” Of course the Roman authorities “were not very happy with that.”
He continues, “It has never been our intention to pretend either that the Council would be considered as good, or the New Mass would be ‘legitimate’”.
(Cfn, October, 2013)
Archbishop Lefebvre on the Novus Ordo Mass, 1990 Conference:
“…And that’s why I never will celebrate the Mass according to the new rite, even under threat of ecclesiastical penalties and I will never advise anyone positively to participate actively in such a mass.”
Because people are still asking us those questions: “I have not the Mass of St. Pius V on Sunday, and there is a mass said by a priest that I know well, a holy man, so, wouldn’t be better to go to the mass of this priest, even if it is the new mass but said with piety instead of retaining myself?”
No! That’s not true! This is not true! Because this rite is bad! Is bad, is bad. This is the reason why this rite is bad, he is poisoned! It is a rite poisoned! Mr. Salleron says it very well here: “It is not a choice between two rites that would be good! This is a choice between a Catholic Rite and a rite practically, neighboring the Protestantism!” Its harm our Faith, the Catholic Faith!
So, it is out of question to encourage people to go to mass in the new rite, because slowly, even without realizing it, they end up ecumenist! It’s strange, but it’s like that. It is a fact…”
“…Of course, that’s why it is said: “in a positive manner to participate actively at such a mass.” But we can eventually, for reasons, as it is written in canon law like orthodox ceremonies, assist passively. For a wedding, parent’s funerals or things like that, where we feel obliged to be present and we cannot do otherwise, we assist passively. We don’t receive communion, we are not participating in the mass, but we are doing it more out of politeness towards the people who assist to it, than for assisting at the sacrifice of the Mass. Those are conditions that are already mentioned in the canon law, the old canon law. But attending to it in order to replace Sunday Mass, no! It is better to stay home reading and going once a month. Make the effort to go once a month and do 100 km if necessary, to attend the Catholic Mass! Like in the missions, we were visiting our faithful’s three times a year. We could not do more! That was the average. This didn’t mean that they were bad Christians. They could not do it otherwise. It is not an impossible thing. So we say: “But am I not doing a grave sin by not going to Mass?” Not at that mass! It does not oblige under pain of grave sin. We are never forced to do an act that tends to diminish our faith. It’s not possible. God cannot force us to do an act like this. On the other hand, […]we are seriously obliged to do everything possible to attend the Mass of St. Pius V, the Catholic Mass. There, the obligation remains, but not for a rite that is almost Protestant. On the contrary, there is an obligation not to go…”
+ Fellay “(W)e don’t use that word. It’s a bit messy, our faithful have enough [confusion] regarding the validity, so we tell them, ‘The New Mass is bad, it is evil’ and they understand that. Period!”
(Shh– we don’t want to confuse the little people.) Is it valid or not?!
Mr. Salleron (from your comment below) “This is a choice between a Catholic Rite and a rite practically, neighboring the Protestantism!” NEIGHboring — i.e. Almost – Close To – but NOT!
IMHO it seems that Novus Ordo Missae translates not as New Mass, but New Order of Mass. The Mass is our participation in the Last Supper and the Sacrifice of Calvary. The different prayers, actions and trappings are how we celebrate the Mysteries. Do we deny that Pope Paul VI and the Cardinals and Bishops approved/instituted this new liturgy, (however badly it may have been designed)? If so, it was done by the One Holy Roman Catholic Church. And we know from the 22nd session of Trent, CANON VII.–If any one saith, that the ceremonies, vestments, and outward signs, which the Catholic Church makes use of in the celebration of masses, are incentives to impiety, rather than offices of piety; let him be anathema! http://traditionalcatholic.net/Tradition/Council/Trent/Twenty_Second_Session,_Canons.html
To claim the Church didn’t institute the N.O.M. seems to me to declare Paul VI was not the pope.
Please note that this does not include all the abuses, alterations and what can only be called scandalous behavior and attire. There are bad priests and bishops, and other “ministers”. But don’t tell me that a Catholic in the state of grace, attending a Novus Ordo Missae – even in the vernacular–, done according to the rubrics, is not receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist.
Sorry “your comment below” was anticipating this going in between your two comments up there. (I luv computers. Always doing what you tell them rather than what you want.)
Just to clarify, … receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist at a Holy Valid Mass.
“…Clearly, an invalid Mass is not a Mass at all, and does not satisfy the Sunday obligation. Furthermore, when it comes to the sacraments, Catholics are obliged to follow the “pars tutior,” the safer path. It is not permissible to knowingly receive doubtful sacraments. Consequently nobody has the obligation to satisfy his Sunday obligation by attending the New Mass, even if there is no other alternative.
However, even if we could be certain of the validity of the Novus Ordo Masses celebrated in today’s Conciliar churches, it does not follow that they are pleasing to God. Much to the contrary, they are objectively sacrilegious, even if those who assist at them are not aware of it. By such a statement, I do not mean that all those who celebrate or assist at the New Mass are necessarily in mortal sin, having done something directly insulting to Almighty God and to our Divine Savior.
Sacrilege is a sin against the virtue of religion, and is defined as “the unbecoming treatment of a sacred person, place or thing as far as these are consecrated to God” (Jone, Moral Theology, p.108). The moral theologians explain that sacrilege is in itself and generally a mortal sin (ex genere suo), but that it is not always a mortal sin, because it can concern a relatively small or unimportant thing. Here we are speaking of a real sacrilege, the dishonoring of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, by the elimination of the prayers and ceremonies that protect its holiness, by the absence of respect, piety and adoration, and by the failure to express the Catholic doctrine of the Mass as a true propitiatory sacrifice for our sins. Here there are varying degrees. Just as it is a grave sacrilege and objective mortal sin for a lay person to touch the sacred host without reason, so it is, for example, a venial sin to do the same thing to the chalice or the blessed linens, such as the purificator or pall.
Likewise with the New Mass. It can be an objectively mortal sin of sacrilege if Holy Communion is distributed in the hand or by lay ministers, if there is no respect, if there is talking or dancing in church, or if it includes some kind of ecumenical celebration, etc. It can also be an objectively venial sin of sacrilege if it is celebrated with unusual respect and devotion, so that it appears becoming and reverential to Almighty God. This in virtue of the omissions in the rites and ceremonies, which constitute a true disrespect to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and to the Blessed Trinity, and of the failure to express the true nature of what the Mass really is. In each case, the subjective culpability is an altogether other question that God only can judge.
However, regardless of the gravity of the sacrilege, the New Mass still remains a sacrilege, and it is still in itself sinful. Furthermore, it is never permitted to knowingly and willingly participate in an evil or sinful thing, even if it is only venially sinful. For the end does not justify the means. Consequently, although it is a good thing to want to assist at Mass and satisfy one’s Sunday obligation, it is never permitted to use a sinful means to do this. To assist at the New Mass, for a person who is aware of the objective sacrilege involved, is consequently at least a venial sin. It is opportunism. Consequently, it is not permissible for a traditional Catholic, who understands that the New Mass is insulting to Our Divine Savior, to assist at the New Mass, and this even if there is no danger of scandal to others or of the perversion of one’s own Faith (as in an older person, for example), and even if it is the only Mass available.” [Answered by Fr. Peter R. Scott, SSPX]
