Ave Regina Cælorum, Marian Antiphon chanted in the Traditional Roman liturgy from 2 February (Feast of the Purification of the Virgen Mary / Presentation of the Lord) through Holy Wednesday at the Hour of Compline.

Sung by Fr. José Miguel Marqués Campo at the end of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Gijón, Archdiocese of Oviedo (Asturias) Spain on 7 February 2016, accompanied by our young and talented organist, Ramón Villoria.

Ave Regina Cælorum,
Ave Domina Angelorum:
Salve radix, salve porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta.

Gaude Virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis, Christum exora.

Hail, O Queen of Heaven, enthroned!
Hail, by Angels Mistress owned!
Root of Jesse, Gate of morn,
Whence the world’s true light was born:

  1. Thank you, Father Campo. Beautiful and sad at the same time. This is what we have lost. The image of Our Lady and the Christ Child clinging to Her is magnificent. It is a lesson for all of us. Cling to Our Lady as She shows us Her Son. “Plead with Christ our sins to spare.” God bless you, Father and Louie.

  3. A beautiful reminder of that we still HAVE. Too bad to use this lovely thing as a reminder of the negative. We HAVE these things – they have not gone away. Let’s simply gaze at the beauties of Tradition and love them.

  4. Yes, Barbara, we still have these wonderful truly Catholic things—thanks to Tradition!! Let us pray that beautiful hymns to Our Lady sung in Latin will be restored to every diocese. You are right—they are not lost, just hidden.

  5. Sure, Barbara. That’s what St. John the Baptist, Jesus Christ and all the apostles including St. Stephen did! Let’s just appreciate what we have and stare at it! What Catholics want is the beatific vision (heaven). Singing is all very well, but protestants have had Bach etc., English boys and Mormon choirs–but w/out God it is nothing. (Matthew 16:26)
