Vociferous defender of the Faith, Bill Donohue of the Catholic League, has come out guns-a-blazing, calling His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan to task for his shameful track record of inviting scandal in the Church, thereby jeopardizing the eternal salvation of those souls over which he is charged with leading, protecting and nurturing in truth as Shepherd, even unto martyrdom.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was the abomination that took place on Palm Sunday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where unapologetic pro-abortion politician Joe Biden received Holy Communion after having been singled out for honor by Cardinal Dolan who announced to the standing room only gathering, “We welcome the vice president of the United States, Mr. Biden, we welcome him here!”
In light of Cardinal Dolan’s disregard for his duty to protect the flock, which necessarily includes acting as chief guardian of the Blessed Sacrament in his diocese, Donohue’s counter-offensive will include an effort to convince benefactors of the Archdiocese of New York to exercise “good stewardship” by withholding their financial support until such time as the Archbishop is replaced with someone who is truly respectful of the Catholic faith.
Well it’s about damn time, isn’t it?
I’m sorry to say, however, it isn’t happening. I hope you’ll forgive me for teasing you with a parody. I did it to make a point.
The truth is, Bill Donohue and the Catholic League haven’t made a peep, at least as far as I can tell, about Cardinal Dolan’s shameful disregard for the duties of his exalted office. They have, however, launched just such a campaign against comedian Bill Maher.
Donohue fashions himself to be a defender of the Faith whose organization is worthy of our financial support, but anyone with eyes to see must certainly realize by now what a joke that is.
Yes, Bill Maher is a jackass who deserves rebuke, but no one honestly believes that he speaks for the Catholic Church.
On the other hand, millions of ill-informed human beings believe that Cardinal Dolan is a trustworthy spokesperson and model for what the Church professes, but the sad reality is, he is not, and thanks to his high office there can be little doubt that he is leading far more souls to perdition than Bill Maher could ever hope to corrupt.
The Bill Maher’s of the world will always be with us; our Blessed Lord told us as much when He said, “If the world hated me it will also hate you.” When the Church and her prelates are living up to their sacred obligations well, the faithful are more than capable of combating whatever danger an irreverent comedian may present, and they might even play a role in converting the poor fool.
It is when the likes of the Cardinal Archbishop of New York chuckle and cavort as the people in their care starve for lack of a real shepherd that the Maher’s become truly dangerous.
It’s time for Bill Donohue to either man-the-hell-up and start defending the Catholic faith against the cancer that is killing her from within, or deservedly go broke.
My guess (call me a pessimist or a realist) is that Donohue will remain silent in the face of Cardinal Dolan’s disgusting and damaging behavior. Every indication to this point seems to say that he is content to be little more than just the Catholic version of Abraham Foxman.
I hope to be proven wrong.
