In this episode of Vatican II Revisited, Kevin Davis and I examine the Decree on Ecumenism, a document that, although approved at the third of the Council’s four sessions, serves very much as a key to understanding the thrust of certain other conciliar texts, such as Sacrosanctum Concilium (which we examined in the previous episode) and Nostra Aetate, the subject of our next episode.
While the Council’s defenders often argue that while the conciliar text is often ambiguous, a faithful reading is possible, albeit with great effort. Setting aside the fact that Holy Mother Church never speaks in riddles in matters of faith and morals, this particular approach to defending the conciliar text is entirely unconvincing with respect to the Decree on Ecumenism insofar as it contains what can only be described as blatant heresy.
