In this episode, Kevin Davis and I will discuss the document, Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, wherein the Council goes about offering its own unique brand of ecclesiology, describing the nature of the Church, exactly whom God established as the Church, her relationship with the one Church of Christ, etc.
Unique? According to whom?
According to no less an expert and conciliar insider than John Paul II, who was present at Vatican II as one of the more active bishops. As we will address early on in this episode, John Paul spoke of the Council’s treatment of the Church’s self-awareness as something “utterly new” and “quite unknown” prior to Vatican II.
To this, your immediate reaction may be: Wait just a minute! Ours is the faith that comes to us from the Apostles. ‘Utter newness’ doesn’t seem compatible with authentic Catholic tradition.
If this describes your manner of thinking, congratulations, your sensus Catholicus is alive and well. If not, don’t fret, rather, take a good look at the following episode and chances are, by the time you’re finished watching, you’ll understand exactly how incompatible the conciliar novelties are with the Church’s traditional ecclesiology.
As always, I ask that you please share this far and wide if, in fact, you find it worthy. Your feedback in the comment section, either positive or negative, will be genuinely appreciated.
